Problem with login page working with Jumi

Jumi is AWESOME! I'm having a small problem though and I hope someone can offer a suggestion...

I'm having difficulty getting the login page (/index.php?option=com_user&view=login) to display it's error message in certain cases when called by a Jumi included page:

- I want the menu item to be present for the public and,
- when they go to the menu item, I want the user to be taken to a login page if they are not already logged in. Note: If I make the Jumi page restricted, it 404s).

I am doing this be placing this code in the a page that is served by Jumi (with a php include statement). It works great except for if the user fails to log in on the login page, they receive no error message at the top of the page advising them of anything. It appears broken.

if (empty($_SESSION[curl_options][username])) { //user is not logged in
$return_url = "/main/index.php?option=com_jumi&fileid=7&Itemid=151&step=1";
$final_return_url = base64_encode($return_url);
header("Location: index.php?option=com_user&view=login&return=".$final_return_url);
} else { //user is logged in

Any thoughts?
